About OHSU

OHSU is Oregon’s only public academic health center. We are a system of hospitals and clinics across Oregon and southwest Washington. We are an institution of higher learning, with schools of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry and public health - and with a network of campuses and partners throughout Oregon. We are a national research hub, with thousands of scientists developing lifesaving therapies and deeper understanding. We are a statewide economic engine and Portland’s largest employer. And as a public organization, we provide services for the most vulnerable Oregonians, and outreach to improve health in communities across the state.

Across our missions of healing, teaching and discovery, we unite some of the world’s brightest minds in a singular vision: to rethink everything. We are creators of precision cancer medicine. We are innovators of an education model that lets each student forge a unique path. We turn discoveries into lifesaving care.

Mission

As part of its multifaceted public mission, OHSU strives for excellence in education, research and scholarship, clinical practice and community service. Through its dynamic interdisciplinary environment, OHSU stimulates the spirit of inquiry, initiative and cooperation among students, faculty and staff.

Setting the example for integrity, compassion and leadership, OHSU strives to:

  • Educate tomorrow’s health professionals, scientists, engineers and managers in top-tier programs that prepare them for a lifetime of learning, leadership and contribution.
  • Explore new basic, clinical and applied research frontiers in health and biomedical sciences, environmental and biomedical engineering and information sciences, and translate these discoveries, wherever possible, into applications in the health and commercial sectors.
  • Deliver excellence in health care, emphasizing the creation and implementation of new knowledge and cutting-edge technologies.
  • Lead and advocate for programs that improve health for all Oregonians, and extend OHSU’s education, research and health care missions through community service, partnerships and outreach.

More information about OHSU’s mission, vision, and values is published on the university website.

Accreditation

OHSU maintains continuous accreditation by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), an institutional accrediting body approved by the U.S. Department of Education. For more information, contact: NWCCU, 8060 165th Ave NE Suite 100, Redmond, WA 98052, 425 558-4224 or visit nwccu.org/.

Accreditation of an institution of higher education by NWCCU indicates that it meets or exceeds criteria for the assessment of institutional quality evaluated through a peer review process. An accredited university is one that has available the necessary resources to achieve its stated purposes through appropriate educational programs, is substantially doing so, and gives reasonable evidence that it will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. Institutional integrity is also addressed through accreditation.

NWCCU accreditation is not partial but applies to the institution as a whole. As such, it is not a guarantee of every course or program offered, or the competence of individual graduates. Rather, it provides reasonable assurance about the quality of opportunities available to students who attend OHSU.

The following schools and programs have specialized accreditations.

School of Dentistry

School of Medicine

School of Nursing

School of Public Health

College of Pharmacy

State Authorization

OHSU participates in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA) through the State of Oregon. Our participation means we comply with comparable national education standards for distance learning courses and programs. This makes it easier for students to take online courses or participate in clinical experiences offered by postsecondary institutions based in other participating states. Per SARA policy, OHSU provides the institution’s and SARA’s complaint resolution policies and procedures to all students taking courses under SARA policies at: https://www.ohsu.edu/education/out-state-authorization

University Leadership

At list of the members of the OHSU Board of Directors and Executive Leadership is published on the OHSU website.
