General Education Requirements

General education requirements are intended to provide students with exposure to a wide range of disciplines and areas of knowledge and to ensure they develop a set of general critical competencies. All students earning a B.S. at OHSU complete the same general education requirements. OHSU does not offer general education coursework; courses must be taken at other institutions and transferred to OHSU. Acceptance of transfer credit is governed by the Transfer of Course Credit policy (02-70-005) and the accompanying Undergraduate Transfer Procedure.

Students with Previous Degrees

OHSU accepts the Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer (AAOT) or an equivalent degree approved by the OHSU Registrar or any baccalaureate degree, excluding workforce-oriented degrees such as the Bachelor of Applied Science, conferred from an appropriately accredited college or university to fulfill all general education requirements. Students holding a baccalaureate degree from a foreign institution must submit documentation from an approved credential evaluation service (see Undergraduate Transfer Procedure) verifying that the degree is equivalent to a U.S. baccalaureate degree or higher to be considered second baccalaureate degree students.

Major Requirements

The major consists of coursework in a focused field of study. Major requirements are set by the school or program and may include restrictions on the recency of earned credits and minimum grade. The major at OHSU is composed of two types of coursework: core courses and supplementary courses.

Major Core Courses

The major core consists of focused coursework in the major field that is offered through OHSU or through a partner institution of the Oregon Consortium for Nursing Education (OCNE). Major core coursework may not be used to fulfill general education requirements.

Major Supplementary Courses

The major supplementary courses support learning in the major field and are not offered at OHSU. Courses must be taken at other institutions and transferred to OHSU. Acceptance of transfer credit is governed by the Transfer of Course Credit policy (02-70-005) and the accompanying Undergraduate Transfer Procedure. Major Supplementary courses may be used to fulfill general education requirements.

Electives

Electives are courses needed to meet the 180-credit minimum for the degree but not required to meet the general education or major requirements. Any course outside the major core subject area taken at OHSU or accepted in transfer may be used to meet the electives requirement.

Students with Previous Degrees

OHSU accepts the Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer (AAOT) or an equivalent degree approved by the OHSU Registrar to fulfill up to 45 credits of electives and any baccalaureate degree, excluding workforce-oriented degrees such as the Bachelor of Applied Science, conferred from an appropriately accredited college or university to fulfill all elective credits.

Class Standing

Undergraduate students are classified according to the number of credits taken at OHSU or accepted in transfer that have been applied to a degree requirement. Credits not applied to the degree do not count toward class standing.

Class Standing Credits applied to the degree
Freshman Fewer than 45
Sophomore 45 to 89.75
Junior 90 to 134.75
Senior 135 or more
