BMI 536 Evidence-Based Medicine

This hybrid course provides a rigorous introduction to the principles of evidence-based medicine (EBM). It begins with an overview of how to frame an answerable clinical question and then find the best evidence to answer it. The major categories of questions that arise in clinical practice - treatment, diagnosis, harm (etiology), and prognosis - are each covered, with instruction on what is the best type of evidence to answer questions, how to find that evidence, and how to apply it to a given patient. This is followed by units on summarizing evidence (e.g., through systematic reviews and meta-analysis), putting evidence into practice (e.g., implementing clinical practice guidelines), and the limitations of the EBM approach.
