HIP 530 Leadership Skills in Team Science

Credits: 2
Team science requires skillful leadership from multiple members of research teams. Effective academic leaders influence others through self-awareness and relationships. They are clear and open about what they want to accomplish and aware of the impact they have on others. They are skilled at understanding other perspectives, sensing others’ emotions, and reading political currents. They manage relationships well, motivate others, resolve disagreements, and move to action in collaboration with others. This course offers practical communication skills for influencing and leading team members in a collaborative team science environment. After completing this course, you will be able to: increase your awareness of the impact you have on others; invite and work with different academic and political perspectives; build strong collaborative relationships; mentor and coach others; and use dialogue and crucial conversations to set direction and move your research team to action. Each session of this course combines invigorating, practical skill building with the opportunity for students to contribute personal experiences in leadership and to learn from other students in a structured collective learning process.
