NEUS 646 Advanced Topics in Glial Cell Development and Function

Credits: 3
Introduction to the major model organisms used to study glia the cellular, molecular, and genetic tools used in each organism, and how approaches in each of these organisms help to answer key questions in the field of glial biology and neuron-glia interactions. Topics include glial cell fate specification and terminal differentiation; glia support of neuronal development, survival, and morphological plasticity; axon-glia interactions during ensheathment and support of axon biology; astrocyte functions; OPCs and oligodendrocyte development and function; microglia and other myeloid cell functions in the brain; glial control of neuronal remodeling; glial roles in neural circuit activity; glial roles in nervous system injury and neurodegenerative disease. Overview of technical approaches to enable the visualization and manipulation of glial cell morphology and functions in vivo.
